Character Sets


World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) 

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops specifications and guidelines that aim to standardise how web technologies are applied.  Amongst the numerous specifications you will find the character references defined in HTML 4.01.


International
Organisation for
Standardization (ISO)
 
ISO develops international standards that are recognised worldwide. These standards include ISO/IEC 8859-1 (the Latin-1 character set) and ISO/IEC 10646-1 (ISO's answer to Unicode). 

Unicode Consortium  Unicode is an emerging standard that provides a unique number for every character, enabling the character to be displayed on any platform,  with any program and in any language.

 

Symbols


Symbols.com  SYMBOLS.com presents more than 2,500 Western signs, arranged into 54 groups according to their graphic characteristics.  Signs range from ideograms carved in mammoth teeth by Cro-Magnon men, to hobo signs and subway graffiti.
